U.S. Hails Iraq’s Decision to Finalize Operating License for Starlink

Iraq has officially approved an operating license for Starlink, allowing the satellite internet service to enter its market. The decision came during high-level talks in Baghdad involving US Special Presidential Envoy Tom Barrack and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

Both sides welcomed the agreement and highlighted its importance for Iraq’s digital future. Additionally, they discussed broader strategies to strengthen cooperation between Iraq and the United States. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting focused on investment, technology, and long-term partnerships.

The approval allows Elon Musk’s satellite network to deliver high-speed internet services across Iraq. Furthermore, officials expect the move to improve connectivity in rural and underserved regions. As a result, Iraq aims to reduce its reliance on traditional infrastructure.

Starlink operates under SpaceX through its subsidiary Starlink Services, LLC. The system uses a large constellation of satellites to provide global broadband coverage. Therefore, Iraq’s decision places it within a growing list of countries adopting satellite internet technology.

Earlier in May 2025, Iraqi officials met with Starlink representatives to explore potential cooperation. At that time, al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s growing investment opportunities. He also encouraged partnerships in the communication and technology sectors.

Moreover, the Iraqi government has actively promoted digital transformation policies in recent years. Al-Sudani instructed relevant authorities to simplify procedures for international tech companies. Consequently, officials aim to accelerate approvals and attract global investors.

In addition, Iraq continues to position itself as an emerging technology market in the region. The government now encourages collaboration between foreign companies and the local private sector. This approach aims to create jobs and modernize national services.

US Special Presidential Envoy Tom Barrack praised the decision during the Baghdad meeting. He described the approval as a positive step toward stronger bilateral relations. Meanwhile, Iraqi officials stressed the importance of technological progress for economic growth.

The Iraq Starlink approval deal, therefore, represents more than just a licensing decision. It reflects a broader strategy to modernize Iraq’s communication systems. It also highlights growing cooperation between Iraq and major US technology firms.

Ultimately, the Iraq Starlink approval deal shows Iraq’s ambition to integrate into the global digital economy. It also marks a significant milestone in the country’s long-term development strategy.
