Lawmakers Warn Over Export Risks and Gas Flaring Delays

Iraqi lawmakers have warned that major structural weaknesses continue to threaten the country’s energy sector, raising concerns about oil exports and gas processing projects.

The latest assessments place Iraq’s energy challenges in 2026 at the center of national economic and energy discussions. Moreover, officials argue that urgent action is necessary to strengthen the sector’s resilience.

Members of the parliamentary Oil, Gas, and Natural Resources Committee outlined these concerns in separate statements published by the state-run press on Sunday.

Committee member Khalid Sido criticized Iraq’s continued dependence on a single maritime route for crude oil exports. He argued that relying heavily on one export outlet poses a serious threat to national security.

According to Sido, Iraq has failed to diversify its export infrastructure despite repeated warnings about regional instability.

The Iraq energy challenges 2026 debate has intensified because recent disruptions exposed the country’s vulnerability to supply interruptions.

Sido pointed to the stalled Basra-Aqaba pipeline project as a missed strategic opportunity. The proposed pipeline would transport Iraqi crude to Jordan’s Red Sea port and provide an alternative to Gulf shipping routes.

However, the project remains inactive. Consequently, Iraq continues to depend largely on maritime exports through a limited number of channels.

Sido also urged the government to invest part of its financial reserves in building a national tanker fleet.

He noted that international shipping firms charge Iraq between $3 and $4 per barrel in freight costs. Therefore, a state-owned fleet could reduce expenses and strengthen Iraq’s control over export operations.

Furthermore, Sido argued that domestic shipping capabilities would improve the country’s ability to maintain deliveries during regional emergencies.

The Iraq energy challenges 2026 discussion also focused on Iraq’s long-standing gas flaring problem.

Committee member Hawra Aziz Al-Mousawi said Iraq cannot completely eliminate gas flaring by the end of next year.

She explained that several major requirements still need completion before authorities can achieve that objective.

According to Al-Mousawi, infrastructure development remains one of the biggest obstacles. In addition, financing needs continue to slow progress.

Operational readiness also presents challenges. Moreover, authorities must complete several interconnected projects before ending routine flaring.

As a result, expectations for a rapid solution have diminished.

The Iraq Energy Challenges 2026 report highlights the broader difficulties facing Iraq’s energy sector. While officials continue to pursue reforms, structural constraints remain significant.

Analysts believe Iraq must accelerate strategic investments in export infrastructure and gas processing facilities. Otherwise, vulnerabilities could continue to affect revenues and energy security.

Ultimately, the Iraq energy challenges 2026 debate underscores a growing reality. Iraq’s future energy stability depends not only on production capacity but also on diversification, infrastructure modernization, and long-term planning.
