Iraq Begins Integrating Saraya al-Salam Fighters and Weapons Under State Authority

State control of weapons remains a key priority as Iraqi authorities move forward with efforts to integrate Saraya al-Salam members and arms into official institutions.

The process began shortly after Muqtada al-Sadr announced his faction’s commitment to government reforms. Those reforms aim to place armed groups and their equipment under state authority.

Lieutenant General Qais al-Muhammadawi confirmed that officials received complete information regarding Saraya al-Salam formations. The data included details about personnel, weapons, and military equipment.

Furthermore, al-Muhammadawi said authorities continue efforts to complete the integration process. The initiative seeks to place all Saraya al-Salam formations under Iraq’s security forces.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi recently ordered the formation of a special committee. That body oversees measures designed to place all weapons under government authority.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, the initiative follows constitutional principles and existing laws. Officials believe the plan will strengthen security and support stability across the country.

Moreover, the government hopes the move will reinforce state institutions. Leaders also aim to build a stronger Iraq that meets the expectations of its citizens.

Meanwhile, al-Muhammadawi said the committee works closely with several institutions. Those bodies include the Popular Mobilization Forces, the Defense Ministry, and the Interior Ministry.

In addition, legal authorities continue to coordinate with security agencies. Officials say cooperation remains essential for the success of the initiative.

The push gained momentum after al-Sadr announced a complete separation between Saraya al-Salam and the National Shiite Movement. He also declared the group’s full integration into the state.

According to al-Sadr, national interests motivated the decision. He said the move aims to protect Iraq from growing threats and challenges.

Consequently, state control of weapons has become one of the most important elements of Iraq’s security reforms. Authorities believe stronger institutions can help preserve stability.

Saraya al-Salam emerged in 2014. Many observers consider the faction the successor to the Mahdi Army. That group fought coalition forces after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s government in 2003.

Meanwhile, the latest developments align with promises made by al-Zaidi after taking office. During his address to parliament in May, he pledged to pursue broad security reforms.

He stressed the importance of limiting weapons to state institutions. In addition, he promised to strengthen the capabilities of security forces.

Furthermore, al-Zaidi vowed to reinforce public trust in democratic institutions. Officials believe stronger security structures can support those goals.

As efforts continue, observers view the initiative as a significant step for Iraq. Consequently, state control of weapons remains central to the government’s broader vision for security and national stability.

Many analysts also believe these measures could reshape Iraq’s political landscape. Therefore, state control of weapons will likely remain a major issue in the months ahead.
