Iraq traffic accidents continue to raise concerns as another deadly crash claimed the lives of three soldiers near Kirkuk.
Three Iraqi soldiers lost their lives late Friday after a traffic accident on the Baghdad-Kirkuk highway. The incident also left five other soldiers with serious injuries.
According to local authorities, the crash occurred near the Hamrin mountain range. The accident took place opposite Maftoul village, south of Kirkuk province.
Officials confirmed that the victims served in the Iraqi Army’s Eighth Division and Second Special Forces Division. Meanwhile, medical teams rushed the injured soldiers to hospitals for treatment.
In addition, local authorities expressed condolences to the Ministry of Defense and military institutions. Officials also praised the service and dedication of the soldiers involved.
Furthermore, the incident once again highlighted the dangers facing travelers across the country’s roads. Safety concerns continue to affect major highways in several provinces.
Moreover, experts often cite speeding as a major cause of deadly collisions. Poor road conditions also contribute to many accidents. Vehicle safety problems create additional risks for drivers and passengers.

Data released by the Iraqi Ministry of Planning showed the scale of the problem. Authorities recorded 11,763 traffic accidents across the country in 2024.
Consequently, those accidents caused 2,719 deaths and nearly 11,900 injuries. The figures reflected the heavy human cost linked to road safety issues.
Meanwhile, authorities in the Kurdistan Region also reported hundreds of incidents. Officials recorded 779 accidents during 2024.
Those crashes claimed 98 lives and injured more than 1,400 people. Therefore, concerns over transportation safety remain widespread.
This latest tragedy follows another deadly incident that struck Kirkuk in late April. At that time, six people died after a cement truck collided with several vehicles.
Additionally, twelve others suffered injuries in that crash. The collision occurred on the main road connecting Kirkuk and Sulaimani.
However, officials in the Kurdistan Region say recent measures have improved road safety. Authorities introduced modern technologies to strengthen traffic management.
Earlier this year, Hemin Mirany said officials achieved noticeable progress. According to him, traffic-related deaths and injuries declined significantly over the last five years.
He added that new traffic technologies played a major role in the improvement. Nevertheless, recent incidents continue to underline the importance of stronger safety measures.
As authorities investigate Friday’s crash, many observers continue to call for better roads and stricter traffic enforcement. Consequently, Iraq traffic accidents remain a pressing issue that demands continued attention.
