Trump Backs Iraq’s High-Stakes Bid to Defuse US-Iran Crisis

US President Donald Trump has approved an Iraqi proposal to help ease tensions between Washington and Tehran. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi presented the plan during high-level talks with Trump in Washington. Iraq Mediation will address the growing crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. The initiative also aims to protect global shipping and energy supplies.

Al-Zaidi asked Trump to support an official Iraqi role in negotiations with Iran. Trump then authorized the Iraqi leader to begin diplomatic efforts with both governments. Consequently, Baghdad will seek practical solutions to the crisis. Iraqi officials hope these efforts can prevent further regional instability.

The Strait of Hormuz holds major importance for international trade and global energy markets. Oil exporters transport large quantities of crude through the narrow waterway. Therefore, any disruption can quickly affect fuel prices and shipping costs worldwide. Recent tensions have increased concerns among governments, traders, and energy companies.

Iraq plans to concentrate mainly on the economic side of the negotiations. Meanwhile, Pakistan has already participated in political and diplomatic discussions. Baghdad now wants to address shipping delays and interrupted oil exports. Furthermore, Iraqi officials will discuss ways to restore confidence among commercial shipping companies.

Iraq Mediation could give Baghdad a stronger diplomatic role across the region. Iraq maintains important political and economic relationships with both Washington and Tehran. Therefore, Iraqi leaders believe they can communicate effectively with both sides. This position could help Baghdad narrow major differences between the two governments.

The Iraqi plan will prioritize safe maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. It will also seek guarantees for uninterrupted oil and commercial shipments. In addition, officials will examine measures that could protect ships from future threats. These steps could reduce pressure on international energy markets.

Shipping disruptions have already created wider concerns about global economic stability. Businesses depend heavily on predictable transport routes and steady fuel supplies. Moreover, rising insurance costs can make maritime trade significantly more expensive. These additional costs often reach consumers through higher prices.

Al-Zaidi plans to travel to Tehran for high-level meetings with Iranian officials. During the visit, he will present Iraq’s proposed economic framework. He will also discuss possible measures for protecting ships and energy exports. Afterward, Iraqi officials will evaluate Iran’s response and consider the next steps.

However, the mediation effort may face significant political and security challenges. Washington and Tehran continue to hold opposing positions on several regional issues. Nevertheless, Iraq hopes economic cooperation can create space for broader dialogue. Baghdad may use shared commercial interests to encourage compromise.

Iraqi officials also want to limit the crisis’s impact on regional economies. Iraq relies heavily on oil income and stable international energy markets. Therefore, prolonged disruption could harm government revenue and development spending. It could also increase transportation costs throughout the Middle East.

Meanwhile, global markets will closely follow Baghdad’s diplomatic efforts. Energy traders often react quickly to developments involving the Strait of Hormuz. A successful agreement could ease concerns about oil shortages. It could also lower pressure on shipping, insurance, and fuel prices.

Ultimately, Iraq wants to restore stability without escalating regional tensions. Baghdad will encourage both countries to protect trade and continue direct discussions. The coming negotiations could determine whether Iraq can advance its proposal. Success would strengthen Iraq’s position as an economic and diplomatic mediator.
