Strengthening Economic Cooperation Between Iraq and Lebanon

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani met on Tuesday with Lebanese Minister of Labor Mohammed Bahjat Haidar in Baghdad. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations and strengthening economic cooperation between Iraq and Lebanon, while also covering regional issues and Lebanon’s current developments.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the two leaders held productive discussions. They covered a range of topics including labor movement, investment, telecommunications, and private sector collaboration. A central point of the meeting was the activation of the Iraqi-Lebanese Business Council to support new opportunities for economic growth.

The leaders also discussed improving the regulation of labor affairs between both countries. They expressed a mutual interest in making it easier for workers and investors to operate across borders. Streamlining these processes, they noted, would open doors for the private sector and deepen trust between the two governments.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed Iraq’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability and praised the Lebanese people for their resilience during political and economic challenges. He also emphasized that Iraq firmly rejects any acts of aggression targeting Lebanon or threatening regional peace.

In response, Minister Haidar conveyed greetings from the Lebanese Prime Minister. He thanked Iraq for its continuous support during difficult times. Haidar emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to building a strong and constructive partnership with Iraq. He specifically highlighted the importance of strengthening economic cooperation in areas that would benefit both nations equally.

Both leaders agreed on the value of promoting long-term collaboration through investment and business initiatives. They stressed the importance of private sector involvement and vowed to create favorable conditions for joint ventures. This includes facilitating market access and encouraging cross-border projects in key industries.

As the meeting concluded, both sides expressed optimism about future progress. They agreed to maintain momentum and explore new frameworks for cooperation. Above all, they saw strengthening economic cooperation as a strategic path forward that serves their mutual interests and contributes to regional stability.
