baghdad, Iraq – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani expressed strong support on Wednesday for Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s approach to resolving longstanding issues between Baghdad and Erbil, describing it as a step in the right direction.
Speaking at the Ninth Sulaymaniyah Forum, President Barzani addressed the complex challenges facing the region and the world, noting that global dynamics are shifting due to ongoing conflicts and rising economic competition. He pointed to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza as examples of how international tensions are reshaping geopolitical balances.
Barzani also highlighted shared global concerns such as climate change, food insecurity, displacement, and terrorism. He stressed the need for collective international responsibility in addressing these threats, which continue to impact communities worldwide.
Touching on regional developments, he welcomed recent peace efforts and emphasized the importance of supporting any initiative aimed at promoting stability. “Peace is a strength for those who pursue it—it defeats no one,” he remarked.
He further called for inclusive governance in Syria, insisting that all components of society must be represented. On Iraq’s internal progress, Barzani reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region values cooperation and believes that its development contributes significantly to Iraq’s overall strength.
Reiterating his commitment to the Iraqi constitution, Barzani endorsed Prime Minister Al-Sudani’s vision for improving relations between the federal and regional governments. He also urged the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament and the swift formation of the regional government to ensure continued political and institutional development.
