Kurdistan Region Calls for Action After Drone Attack Near UAE Consulate

The Kurdistan Regional Government emphasized Kurdistan’s diplomatic security after Monday’s drone attack near the UAE Consulate in Erbil. Officials called the strike a clear violation of international law.

The Department of Foreign Relations urged Baghdad to take responsibility for preventing attacks by armed groups operating inside Iraq. “The Iraqi government must protect Iraq’s sovereignty and stop outlawed armed groups targeting the Kurdistan Region,” the statement said.

The department stressed that the Kurdistan Region is not part of the ongoing war. It highlighted its consistent support for peace, stability, and coexistence in the region.

The UAE also condemned the attack. Its Foreign Ministry described it as a blatant violation of international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry called on both Baghdad and Erbil to investigate and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Debris from one of three explosive-laden drones intercepted by coalition forces fell near the UAE Consulate. A separate drone crashed near a residential development in the Mas City area along the Erbil–Salahaddin Road. Fortunately, no casualties or damages were reported.

Since February 28, the Kurdistan Region has faced at least 196 drone, missile, and rocket attacks, according to Community Peacemaker Teams – Iraqi Kurdistan. These attacks killed four people and injured 19. Most incidents targeted Erbil governorate, striking areas near diplomatic missions, military bases, the international airport, oil fields, and residential zones.

Officials stressed the importance of Kurdistan’s diplomatic security in protecting civilians and foreign missions. Authorities are coordinating with international partners to monitor threats and prevent further attacks.

Kurdistan diplomatic security remains a top priority as the region faces ongoing regional instability. Local and international efforts aim to ensure diplomatic missions, residents, and infrastructure remain safe.
