Iraqi Parliament Erupts Amid Regional Tensions and US Embassy Attack

Iraq’s Parliament witnessed a dramatic escalation on Saturday night as lawmakers allied with pro-Iran armed groups chanted “death to America” and praised the Axis of Resistance. The session aimed to discuss Iraq’s security and regional developments amid the ongoing US-Israel–Iran conflict.

The meeting, which began around 9:30 pm, included Iraq’s top military and security commanders. Lawmakers used the platform to issue warnings and highlight the role of the Axis of Resistance in recent attacks. Tensions grew as discussions shifted to Iraq’s defense capabilities and strategies to protect the country.

Soon after, parliamentarians linked to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) raised slogans threatening the United States and Israel. They celebrated forces identifying themselves with the Axis of Resistance, an Iran-led coalition including Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Yemen’s Houthis, and parts of the PMF. Sunni, Kurdish, and other Shiite lawmakers largely stayed silent during the outburst.

The session also saw disputes among lawmakers themselves. A verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation between PMF supporters and members of the outgoing Prime Minister’s bloc. The Speaker of Parliament temporarily barred one MP until a formal apology was issued, reflecting deep divisions inside Iraq’s legislative body.

On the same night, four rockets targeted the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone. Security forces intercepted three rockets, while one landed near the embassy. Authorities immediately launched investigations. The government emphasized that attacks on diplomatic missions endanger national security and are unacceptable. These strikes followed repeated drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region, targeting US positions but also affecting civilian and economic infrastructure.

The chaotic parliamentary session and embassy attack highlight Iraq’s growing vulnerability as regional tensions rise. Analysts warn that such incidents could further destabilize Iraq unless strict measures ensure security. The Axis of Resistance continues to play a central role in shaping Iraq’s political and military landscape.
