Iraq Seeks Stronger Regional Relations as Al-Hakim Meets Turkish Intelligence Chief

Iraq seeks stronger regional relations as it continues expanding diplomatic, security, and economic partnerships across the region. On Tuesday, the head of the State Forces Alliance, Ammar al-Hakim, reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to building positive ties with neighboring countries during a meeting with İbrahim Kalın and his accompanying delegation.

The meeting focused on recent regional developments and the future of cooperation between Iraq and Turkey. In addition, both sides reviewed opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations through shared political, security, and economic interests.

Al-Hakim emphasized that Iraq continues to pursue the strongest possible relations with neighboring countries. He also pointed to the Iraqi Constitution, which prohibits the country from serving as a transit route, military base, or launching point for threats against neighboring states.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of protecting Iraq’s sovereignty. He urged all parties to respect the country’s independence and reject every form of foreign interference. At the same time, he called for stronger cooperation that benefits both Iraq and Turkey.

Economic cooperation also received significant attention during the discussions. Al-Hakim highlighted the importance of the Development Road Project as a strategic opportunity for both countries. He explained that the project could strengthen regional trade while connecting East and West through Iraq and Turkey.

Moreover, he said Iraq has already demonstrated its ability to defeat terrorism across the country. He noted that Iraqi security forces liberated occupied territories and helped rebuild affected areas after years of conflict. He also encouraged regional partners to benefit from Iraq’s counterterrorism experience.

In addition, Al-Hakim called for closer security coordination between Iraq and Turkey. He urged both countries to pursue the remaining terrorist networks together. He also stressed the need to disrupt financing channels and confront ideological networks that continue supporting extremist groups.

Iraq seeks stronger regional relations through cooperation that promotes stability instead of conflict. Therefore, Al-Hakim expressed optimism about ongoing diplomatic efforts between the Iran and the United States. He said he hopes their memorandum of understanding will eventually produce a lasting and comprehensive agreement.

He added that such an agreement could reduce regional tensions and restore long-term security. Furthermore, he encouraged influential countries across the region to continue supporting dialogue and de-escalation efforts.

The discussions also covered Iraq’s domestic political situation. Al-Hakim said Iraq successfully moved beyond a period of political deadlock. He noted that political leaders elected the country’s three presidencies and formed a functioning government.

However, he explained that Iraq now faces a different challenge. According to Al-Hakim, the country’s main priority has shifted toward strengthening the economy and creating sustainable growth.

He called for greater economic diversification to reduce dependence on oil revenues. He also encouraged expanding export routes for crude oil while opening access to new international markets. According to him, these steps will strengthen national revenues and create broader opportunities for economic development.

Finally, Al-Hakim reaffirmed that cooperation with neighboring countries remains essential for Iraq’s future. He said stronger partnerships can improve security, increase investment, and support regional stability. Iraq seeks stronger regional relations through diplomacy, economic cooperation, and joint efforts to address shared challenges.
