Iraq Secures Turkish Cooperation as Hussein and Barrack Discuss Regional Security

Iraq continues to advance its security policies as Iraq strengthens counterterrorism efforts. Leaders highlight collaboration with international partners and the importance of repatriation of foreign nationals involved in terrorism. They also emphasize that Iraq’s government formation remains a domestic matter.

Fouad Hussein met in Baghdad on Monday with Thomas Barrack and his delegation. The meeting focused on bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States. Leaders stressed the importance of continued coordination in counterterrorism operations.

During discussions, Barrack praised Iraq’s decision to transfer Islamic State detainees from foreign detention centers to Iraqi prisons. He described it as a vital step in reinforcing Iraq’s sovereignty. Hussein confirmed that Iraq is engaging with multiple countries to repatriate their citizens involved in terrorism. He welcomed Türkiye’s agreement to receive nationals implicated in such cases.

The talks also reviewed the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian transitional government. Both sides voiced support for the deal and emphasized swift implementation. Officials noted its direct impact on improving security and stability in Syria.

Furthermore, Hussein and Barrack discussed Iranian–American relations and the upcoming Geneva negotiations mediated by Oman. Hussein warned of the regional dangers of potential conflict. He reaffirmed Iraq’s strong commitment to peaceful solutions and mediation.

The process of forming a new Iraqi government was another key topic. Hussein reiterated that government formation is an internal issue. However, he acknowledged the value of international input, especially from allied countries like the United States. He emphasized maintaining coordination and communication during this transition period.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of diplomacy and strategic planning. They underlined that collaborative security and legal measures are essential to regional stability. They also highlighted Iraq’s proactive stance in counterterrorism as a cornerstone of policy.

Throughout the meeting, Iraq strengthens counterterrorism efforts remained a central theme. Officials stated that such measures not only protect national security but also reinforce Iraq’s role as a responsible partner. By combining legal responsibility with international coordination, Iraq aims to ensure long-term stability.

Finally, the meeting concluded with commitments to continue diplomatic dialogue. Both sides pledged further collaboration on counterterrorism, governance, and regional security, ensuring Iraq strengthens counterterrorism effortsremains a key priority.
