According to the World Bank, road transport handles more than 90 percent of movement across Iraq. Therefore, officials consider road upgrades essential for economic development and connectivity.
Meanwhile, countries across the region continue to explore alternative trade routes. Recent tensions and disruptions have increased the importance of land transport. As a result, several governments have accelerated infrastructure plans.
The Iraq Transport Economic Corridors project will prioritize two major routes. First, authorities will upgrade the north-south corridor between Baghdad and the Turkish border. Second, the project will improve the east-west corridor linking Baghdad with Syria and Jordan.
Officials expect nearly eight million people to benefit from the new and improved roads. In addition, the developments should shorten travel times and increase access to services.
