Iraq Develops First Local Thermal Camera System for Security Use

Iraq thermal camera system development marks a major milestone for the nation’s growing defense technology sector. The Ministry of Industry revealed the first locally-made, portable thermal camera for military and surveillance use.

According to ministry spokesperson Dhuha al-Jubouri, engineers completed the system entirely at the Al-Kindi factory in Nineveh province. The facility belongs to the General Company for Communications and Power.

This achievement highlights Iraq’s commitment to producing high-tech security tools using national talent and local resources. It also signals a new direction in reducing reliance on foreign defense imports.

Al-Jubouri confirmed that the ministry has formally approached both the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior. The goal is to integrate the Iraq thermal camera system into various security and military operations across the country.

The system supports full 360-degree field coverage. Its operational range varies between 6 and 30 kilometers, based on technical adjustments. These features allow flexible use in both urban and remote settings.

To ensure functionality in off-grid areas, the device runs on solar energy and long-lasting batteries. This energy-efficient design supports long surveillance missions without requiring frequent recharging or power sources.

Moreover, this innovation strengthens Iraq’s capacity to monitor borders, critical infrastructure, and sensitive locations. It also enhances field security without depending on foreign-made systems.

The ministry described this invention as a strategic breakthrough. It represents progress toward Iraq’s larger vision of technological independence in key national sectors.

In addition, the system demonstrates how local factories and engineers can produce cutting-edge tools that meet international standards. Such success encourages further investment in domestic manufacturing.

Moving forward, the Ministry of Industry plans to expand its efforts in smart defense systems. This could include advanced optics, communications, and automated security solutions.

If adopted widely, the Iraq thermal camera system may become a model for future locally-made defense technologies. It proves that innovation can thrive even in complex environments when backed by national vision and technical skill.
