Iraq and Iran Discuss Ali Khamenei Funeral Plans During Baghdad Talks

Ali Khamenei funeral plans became a major topic during high-level talks between Iraqi and Iranian officials in Baghdad on Sunday. Furthermore, both countries discussed creating a special mechanism for funeral ceremonies at Shia holy shrines in Iraq. The discussions came as regional tensions continue to shape diplomatic relations across the Middle East.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced the proposal during a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. However, he did not reveal additional details about how the ceremonies would take place or which holy sites would participate.

Araghchi described his meetings in Baghdad as productive. He also said both sides exchanged views on several regional developments. In addition, he briefed Hussein on recent negotiations between Iran and the United States.

Moreover, Araghchi discussed the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that Iran continues to maintain control over the strategic waterway. He also expressed confidence that maritime activities would return to normal once current obstacles disappear.

Meanwhile, Hussein highlighted Iraq’s position on the growing regional crisis. He said fighting around the Strait of Hormuz continues despite the recent memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington.

He emphasized that Iraq rejects military conflict. Instead, Baghdad supports resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiations. Therefore, Iraqi officials continue encouraging diplomatic solutions to regional disagreements.

Hussein also explained how instability in the Strait of Hormuz affected Iraq’s economy. He said disruptions prevented Iraq from exporting oil through normal channels. Consequently, the situation placed additional pressure on the country’s financial outlook.

At the same time, Hussein reaffirmed Iraq’s balanced foreign policy. He noted that Baghdad maintains positive relations with both Washington and Tehran. Additionally, he said Iraq stands ready to support every effort that could permanently reduce tensions.

The Ali Khamenei funeral plans discussions accompanied Araghchi’s official visit to Baghdad. Although officials did not announce the visit’s duration, it took place during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.

Recent military developments continue influencing diplomatic efforts. On Saturday, the United States Central Command announced strikes against several targets inside Iran. According to American officials, the operation followed Iran’s latest attack on a commercial vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.

Shortly afterward, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced retaliatory missile and drone strikes. Iranian officials said the attacks targeted eight American military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Despite the recent escalation, diplomatic channels remain active. On June 18, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at achieving a lasting peace agreement. Both sides later began implementation talks on June 21.

Those negotiations seek to reduce tensions and establish a long-term framework for regional stability. Consequently, officials from neighboring countries continue monitoring every development closely.

The Ali Khamenei funeral plans proposal now adds another diplomatic issue to ongoing discussions between Baghdad and Tehran. Although officials have released few details, the proposal highlights continued cooperation between both governments during a period of significant regional uncertainty.
