Empowering Women in Iraq’s Security Sector: A New Initiative

In a significant move to enhance the role of women in Iraq’s security institutions, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, officially launched the “Training Program in the Security Sector” on Saturday. This initiative is designed to empower women within Iraq’s security forces, aiming to strengthen their participation in various roles across all levels of security institutions.

The announcement came during the first Women’s Security Conference held in Baghdad, a gathering that underscored the government’s commitment to increasing the involvement of women in national security efforts. Al-Sudani, speaking at the event, expressed his deep admiration for the contributions of women within Iraq’s security and military sectors. He emphasized that the establishment of this conference serves as a clear indicator of the government’s determination to support women across all fields, particularly in the security sector.

Over the past two years, women have made significant strides in Iraq’s security agencies, with an increasing number of women occupying key positions. Al-Sudani reiterated his directives for security institutions to continue empowering women, ensuring they have equal access to promotions and leadership roles. This, he noted, is part of the broader strategy to ensure that women have a fair opportunity to contribute to the country’s security and stability.

The Prime Minister also praised the Ministry of Interior for its ongoing efforts to improve women’s participation in the security field, specifically highlighting the creation of new departments that focus on enhancing female involvement. Additionally, he pointed to the growing number of women volunteers in Iraq’s Police College, underscoring the positive impact of this initiative in supporting various security functions.

Reflecting on the pivotal role of women in Iraq’s recent history, Al-Sudani also recalled their courage and resilience during the battles against ISIS. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Iraqi women, who played an instrumental role in supporting the security forces during the liberation campaigns. Their contributions, he noted, were vital in reclaiming the country from the grips of terrorism, showcasing the indomitable spirit of Iraqi women in times of crisis.

Through initiatives like the “Training Program in the Security Sector,” the Iraqi government aims to ensure that women continue to have an active, impactful role in securing the future of Iraq.
