Boosting Health Services in Diwaniyah: A Step Toward Better Maternal and Child Care”

The Boosting Health Services in Diwaniyah initiative took a major leap forward with the opening of two essential hospital units. The Women and Children’s Hospital in Diwaniyah now includes fully renovated maternity and neonatal care units. These upgrades came through support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Japanese Embassy, and the local government.

Japanese Ambassador to Iraq, Akira Endo, confirmed Japan’s financial backing for this vital project. The support came in two stages and totaled $1.25 million. The Japanese government focused on rebuilding and modernizing critical healthcare services in Diwaniyah. Ambassador Endo expressed gratitude to the UNFPA for helping ensure the project’s success.

He also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continue assisting Iraq, especially in Diwaniyah. Japan’s involvement reflects a broader strategy to improve healthcare for vulnerable populations.

UNFPA representative Hind Jalal shared details about the hospital upgrades. The new maternity ward and neonatal intensive care unit now offer better medical services. These improvements became possible thanks to joint support from the Diwaniyah Health Directorate and the Ministry of Health.

Moreover, the UNFPA plans more projects in Diwaniyah in collaboration with other international donors. These future efforts aim to expand the reach of the Boosting Health Services in Diwaniyah initiative. Together, these partnerships can help transform the province’s health infrastructure.

Governor Abbas Shuail Al-Zamili praised the Japanese Embassy and UNFPA for their continued support. He called for more health projects, including new hospitals, modern equipment, and advanced medical supplies. The local government hopes this collaboration will continue to strengthen public health.

Meanwhile, Dr. Amer Al-Khuza’i, Director of Diwaniyah’s Health Department, noted a key result of the project. The neonatal unit gained 18 new beds, expanding intensive care capacity. He confirmed ongoing efforts with the federal government to add 24 more beds. This expansion will increase the unit’s total to 42 beds.

Through cooperation, investment, and commitment, the Boosting Health Services in Diwaniyah program marks a turning point in the province’s medical care. Local and international partners are laying the foundation for long-term improvements in maternal and child health.
