Baghdad to Host First All-Female Photo Exhibition Highlighting Women’s Visual Storytelling

Baghdad is preparing to launch a groundbreaking photography exhibition titled Through Their Eyes: The First Steps. This marks the first all-female photo showcase in Iraq, organized by the French Institute in partnership with the Iraqi Female Photographers (IFP) group.

The exhibition, set to open on Thursday, May 8 at 6:00 PM, will feature photographs captured by 25 Iraqi women from various parts of the country. These participants recently completed a photography workshop led by British photographer Emily Garthwaite. The project aimed to sharpen their skills while also amplifying their unique perspectives.

The event’s central theme, Women’s Visual Storytelling, will take center stage throughout the evening. This phrase encapsulates the core message of the exhibition—highlighting authentic, raw, and personal narratives told through the lenses of Iraqi women.

The exhibition promises more than technical photography. It seeks to present real, spontaneous, and unfiltered glimpses into life from a woman’s point of view. The project encourages viewers to engage with each image and consider the diverse voices behind the camera.

French Ambassador for Human Rights, Ms. Isabelle Rome, will attend the opening. Her presence underscores the cultural and social significance of this initiative. The event also highlights growing international support for Iraq’s creative women.

This initiative represents a major milestone for Iraq’s arts community. For the first time, female photographers will have a dedicated platform to showcase their talent and tell their stories. The photos reflect personal journeys, social realities, and moments of resilience.

Organizers believe this exhibition will open doors for more collaborative art projects in Iraq. Furthermore, they hope it inspires other women to explore photography and self-expression.

Women’s Visual Storytelling plays a vital role in documenting everyday life with honesty and strength. As these photographers share their work, they challenge stereotypes and build new narratives.

This exhibition serves not only as an artistic display but also as a powerful call for representation. Ultimately, Women’s Visual Storytelling invites the world to see Iraq through new, inspiring eyes.
