Al-Mashhadani, Swiss Leaders Discuss Stronger Iraq-Switzerland Cooperation in Baghdad

Iraq-Switzerland cooperation took a major step forward on Thursday when Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani met Swiss National Council President Maya Reniker and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in Baghdad. The meeting, held at the Parliament building, aimed to strengthen political, economic, and social relations between the two nations.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Parliament Secretary-General Safwan al-Jarjari joined the talks. Their attendance showed Iraq’s strong commitment to building closer ties with Switzerland.

At the start of the meeting, Al-Mashhadani welcomed the Swiss delegation warmly. He praised the long-standing friendship between Iraq and Switzerland and stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in various fields. He also said the reopening of the Swiss Embassy in Baghdad marked a significant step in Iraq-Switzerland cooperation.

Al-Mashhadani emphasized Iraq’s interest in attracting Swiss investment. He explained that Swiss companies could help strengthen the Iraqi market, create jobs for young people, and boost trade and development. He also mentioned that Iraq seeks deeper collaboration in education, technology, and energy projects to support long-term growth.

Reniker, moreover, expressed Switzerland’s appreciation for Iraq’s ongoing efforts to expand international partnerships. Furthermore, she said her country is eager to deepen economic and investment cooperation. In addition, she emphasized Switzerland’s desire to support Iraqi companies and enhance parliamentary collaboration. She highlighted that friendship committees, joint visits, and shared legislative expertise could greatly strengthen mutual understanding between both nations.

Meanwhile, Cassis described Iraq as a “key partner in the region.” Moreover, he reaffirmed Switzerland’s readiness to broaden Iraq-Switzerland cooperation in the coming years. Additionally, he noted that Switzerland plans to support Iraq’s development programs and provide advanced technical expertise. He also mentioned that his country will encourage sustainable investment opportunities to help Iraq achieve economic growth and stability.

Finally, the meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain regular dialogue between their parliaments. They also emphasized the importance of strengthening ties at all levels. In conclusion, they pledged to work closely together to promote peace, regional stability, and long-term prosperity for both nations.

Through this meeting, Iraq and Switzerland reaffirmed their mutual commitment to progress. The growing partnership highlights how shared goals and collaboration can create lasting benefits for both nations and their people.
