Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani requested French support for Iraq’s UN Security Council complaint on Wednesday. He emphasized the urgent need to address airstrikes targeting Iraqi security forces.
During a call with President Emmanuel Macron, Sudani highlighted the importance of France standing alongside Iraq in its complaint. He noted that the strikes threaten Iraq’s sovereignty and regional stability.
Both leaders condemned the attacks as an unacceptable violation of international law. Furthermore, they stressed the need to intensify consultations and coordination to resolve crises peacefully.
Sudani explained that Iraq supports all diplomatic efforts aimed at stopping the conflict. He added that these initiatives should ensure security and maintain smooth maritime and air navigation.
Macron responded that France continues its efforts to stop the war. He emphasized coordination with other nations to support regional and international security and stability.
This discussion comes after Iraq’s Ministerial Council for National Security met in an emergency session. The council authorized Iraqi forces to respond to airstrikes on PMF positions. It also directed the Foreign Ministry to summon the U.S. chargé d’affaires and file a complaint with the UN Security Council.
The urgency of the complaint increased after a strike on a military clinic at Habbaniyah base on Wednesday. Seven personnel were killed, and thirteen were wounded. This followed Tuesday’s strike on the same base that killed fifteen PMF members, including the Anbar operations commander.
Analysts noted that Iraq’s diplomatic efforts aim to prevent further escalation. Moreover, gaining support from France, a permanent UN Security Council member, could increase international attention to the crisis.
