Sudani and Rubio Discuss Iraq Diplomatic Protection Amid Rising Attacks

Iraq reaffirmed its commitment to Iraq’s diplomatic protection in a critical phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussion focused on safeguarding foreign diplomatic missions and recent security threats across the country.

The Iraqi Prime Minister underlined the importance of Iraq’s diplomatic protection, emphasizing that all branches of the Iraqi armed forces prioritize securing embassies and consulates. He insisted Iraq will not allow its territory to serve as a launchpad for attacks against neighboring nations.

“The Iraqi government ensures its airspace, land, and waters remain free from military use targeting other countries,” the Prime Minister said. He also condemned any attempt to drag Iraq into ongoing regional conflicts.

Secretary Rubio, representing the United States, strongly condemned attacks by Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups within Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region. Both officials urged the Iraqi government to take all necessary steps to safeguard U.S. personnel and facilities.

The conversation also touched on mutual interests, including restarting Iraq’s oil export pipeline via Turkey. This discussion comes amid escalating security incidents affecting diplomatic facilities and armed groups throughout Iraq.

In recent weeks, rockets targeted the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone. Iraqi security forces successfully dispersed demonstrators attempting to reach the compound during the March 1 protests. Meanwhile, airstrikes hit positions linked to Iran-aligned forces. In Nineveh governorate, one fighter was killed, and three were injured after an unidentified strike. Earlier operations in Anbar governorate killed four fighters and wounded eleven. Additional suspected strikes occurred in Akashat and Jurf al-Sakhar.

The Kurdistan Region faced repeated drone and missile attacks. On Monday, coalition forces intercepted three explosive-laden drones over Erbil. Another drone crashed near the Erbil–Pirmam Road, and debris fell near the UAE Consulate. Monitoring data shows at least 196 drone, missile, and rocket attacks since February 28, causing four deaths and 19 injuries. Most incidents targeted Erbil governorate, hitting the U.S. Consulate, military bases, oil fields, hotels, residential areas, and telecommunications towers.

Iraq’s focus on its diplomatic protection highlights its determination to shield foreign missions while avoiding regional conflicts. Authorities remain on high alert, coordinating with international partners to maintain security and prevent further escalation.
