Baghdad, Iraq — Nouri al-Maliki, head of Iraq’s State of Law Coalition and former prime minister, issued a stark warning on Saturday against attempts to destabilize the country’s political order, asserting that any resurgence of unrest would carry “serious consequences” for the nation.
Speaking at a conference of tribal leaders and sheikhs in Karbala, al-Maliki accused remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) and loyalists of the dissolved Ba’ath Party — the political apparatus of Saddam Hussein’s regime — of working to sabotage Iraq’s post-dictatorship progress. He called for heightened vigilance against these groups, labeling them “forces of disruption” exploiting security gaps to operate covertly.
“Iraq’s stability is a red line,” al-Maliki declared, emphasizing that the country’s democratic framework and security remain intact despite persistent challenges. He warned against foreign-backed efforts to replicate the Syrian civil war scenario in Iraq, stating, “Some seek to import crises to our land, but our security forces and unity will foil these plots.”
The prominent Shiite leader also criticized unnamed political factions for allegedly pressuring authorities to dismantle the Accountability and Justice Commission, a body tasked with purging Ba’athist influence from government institutions, and to release convicted terrorists. He vowed his coalition would “firmly oppose” such measures, arguing they risk reviving sectarian divisions and empowering extremist elements.
“As long as we are here and armed, they will regret it,” al-Maliki asserted, alluding to the role of pro-government militias and security forces in countering threats. His remarks underscored ongoing tensions over Iraq’s fragile political balance, particularly amid debates over reforms and the influence of armed factions.
The conference in Karbala, a city of religious and strategic significance, highlighted efforts to rally tribal support ahead of potential security challenges. Analysts note al-Maliki’s warnings reflect broader concerns about ISIS remnants regrouping in rural areas and Ba’athist sympathizers exploiting bureaucratic divisions.
Al-Maliki, who served as prime minister from 2006 to 2014, remains a polarizing figure in Iraqi politics.
