Suspect Identified in Safaa al-Mashhadani Assassination Case

Safaa al-Mashhadani assassination case has taken a significant turn as Iraqi authorities move closer to revealing the suspect’s identity. A senior official confirmed that investigators have identified the individual believed to be responsible. The public will learn the suspect’s name in the coming days.

Amer Dawood, a Baghdad Provincial Council member, shared this information during a statement on Monday. He noted that the investigation remains active and highly sensitive. According to him, disclosing the suspect’s name too early might disrupt judicial procedures.

Security agencies are continuing their work without delay. They aim to conclude the investigation efficiently and without political interference. Dawood warned that premature exposure of the suspect could be misused by various parties.

Qais al-Muhammadawi, Deputy Commander of Baghdad’s Joint Operations Command, also commented on the case. On Sunday, he revealed that security forces had uncovered evidence linked to the Safaa al-Mashhadani assassination case. The evidence, however, remains confidential as analysis continues.

Safaa al-Mashhadani, a Baghdad Provincial Council member and parliamentary candidate, was tragically killed last Wednesday. A bomb planted beneath his Chevrolet Tahoe exploded in Tarmiah, a northern district of Baghdad. The Baghdad Operations Command confirmed the use of a sticky explosive device.

The killing has intensified political tensions just weeks before Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections. In response, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani ordered swift action. He formed both a forensic team and a top-level investigation committee to handle the case.

The Safaa al-Mashhadani assassination case has drawn nationwide attention due to its timing. Iraq’s parliamentary elections are scheduled for November 11. The vote will include 329 parliamentary seats, with nine allocated to minority groups.

According to the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), thousands of candidates are running in this election. Specifically, 7,768 individuals, including over 2,200 women, are in the race. The candidates come from 31 alliances and 38 political parties.

Officials will open more than 39,000 polling stations across 8,703 centers for voting. They also assigned 4,501 stations for special votes. In the Kurdistan Region, 97 centers will serve displaced persons.

Iraq’s biometric registration system now allows 21 million citizens to vote. Security forces continue their investigation with urgency. Meanwhile, officials urge citizens to stay calm and wait for the suspect’s official announcement.

Authorities stress the need for transparency and justice in resolving this high-profile assassination. With rising political stakes, Iraqis hope the truth behind the killing will emerge soon.
