Musical Revolution in Iraq

Iraq’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities has announced a musical revolution in the country, driven by the rise of new national bands. The Ministry affirmed its dedication to fully supporting artists logistically, enabling them to hold concerts and festivals.

A high-ranking official within the Department of Musical Arts stated that a “musical revolution” is currently taking place, highlighting national bands such as “Sumariat” and the “National Band for Iraqi Musical Heritage” as prime examples. These bands, connected to the Ministry, receive extensive support, including direct attention from the Minister of Culture. The official noted that these bands regularly perform major concerts each month in prominent venues, in addition to participating in various conferences and official functions.

Regarding the Babylon Festival, the official clarified that there are two distinct events: one organized by the Babylon Governorate and the other, the Babylon Festival of Cultures. The specific artists participating in each festival are yet to be announced.

Concerning support for artists, the official explained that, internationally, governments typically do not financially back singers until they have achieved widespread recognition. Success, they emphasized, hinges on an artist’s own hard work and creative talent, especially given the accessibility of various media platforms. However, the official reiterated that the Iraqi state provides crucial logistical assistance, including access to key venues, to facilitate the organization of concerts and festivals. Ultimately, artistic success remains the responsibility of the individual artist.
