Iraq’s Mega Rail Project Connects Basra to Europe

Iraq’s mega rail project connects Basra to Europe through a high-speed railway that promises to reshape regional transport. The $17 billion Development Road project is expected to launch in 2031 and will handle nearly 14 million passengers every year. This ambitious plan demonstrates Iraq’s determination to modernize its infrastructure and strengthen its role in global trade.

The first stage of the project will connect the southern port of Basra with Baghdad. After this initial phase, the line will extend north toward Turkey and eventually reach Europe. Furthermore, Iraq aims to revive older railway lines that stretch from Basra through Baghdad and continue into northern provinces. International financing talks are already underway to ensure strong support for this initiative.

In addition, Iraq continues to operate existing routes, including those between Baghdad and Basra and to the Middle Euphrates. However, a new 85-kilometer stretch will soon link the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf. This addition will further strengthen domestic connectivity while also serving millions of annual pilgrims.

Moreover, the new railway will span 1,200 kilometers and run parallel to a major motorway crossing 11 provinces. Consequently, this alignment guarantees that road and rail infrastructure will complement each other, offering multiple transport options across Iraq. Furthermore, Iraq’s recent entry into the global TIR system highlights its intent to integrate seamlessly with international trade networks.

Beyond its borders, Iraq’s mega rail project connects Basra to Europe. It also has potential links with the Gulf railway network. The Etihad Railway initiative seeks to unite six Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar. Therefore, adding Iraq to this system would position the country as a central transport hub between the Gulf, Turkey, and Europe.

Ultimately, Iraq’s mega rail project connects Basra to Europe and paves the way for a more connected Middle East. Iraq’s mega rail project connects Basra to Europe and creates a vital transport hub that strengthens trade links across the Middle East.
