Iraq to deploy South Korean KM-SAM air defense system as part of its strategy to modernize military capabilities. Officials confirmed that the system will be operational early next year, strengthening the nation’s security and regional defense posture.
Maj. Gen. Tahseen al-Khafaji, head of media and moral guidance, emphasized the leadership’s focus on improving air defense. He said both the commander in chief and the defense minister closely monitor efforts to equip Iraq’s Air Defense Command. Consequently, the procurement of advanced technology remains a top priority.
To demonstrate progress, Iraq conducted Ababeel, a joint exercise with the French Air Force. The drill tested coordination between aircraft and aerial targets, showcasing Iraq’s commitment to modern training and defense readiness. Al-Khafaji explained that the KM-SAM deal with South Korea has entered advanced stages. Moreover, the system will begin service in early 2026, providing Iraq with cutting-edge capabilities.
The South Korean KM-SAM, also called Cheongung, is built to intercept aircraft and ballistic missiles. According to officials, it ranks among the world’s most advanced defense systems. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has underlined repeatedly that securing the skies is essential for national stability.
