Karwan Stuni, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region’s Hajj and Umrah office, said Saudi officials later allowed the buses to continue their journey without further complications.
“The situation has returned to normal, and all buses have passed through safely,” Stuni explained. He confirmed that Saudi authorities had flagged a prohibited item, though officials did not disclose the exact nature of the substance.
The Iraqi Hajj and Umrah authority informed regional officials that some individuals had attempted to carry restricted materials into Saudi Arabia. Although details remain unclear, officials stressed that Saudi authorities reserve the right to continue their investigation. Furthermore, an official announcement could still be issued later.
Because of the discovery, Saudi border staff tightened inspections at the Arar crossing, causing longer delays for pilgrims. Travelers interviewed by the Kurdistan office confirmed that Saudi officials temporarily held the buses but allowed them to resume movement later the same day.

Stuni advised pilgrims to remain cautious. “Citizens should travel to Saudi Arabia without risking the reputation of their country,” he emphasized. His remarks underlined the importance of protecting Iraq’s image during the religious journey.
Although the immediate disruption ended, Saudi authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Therefore, regional officials have reminded all travelers and companies to remain vigilant and avoid carrying any restricted items.
