Iraqi Lawmakers Push to Pass PMF Authority Law Amid Opposition

More than 120 Iraqi lawmakers are actively working to advance the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Authority Law. They have gathered signatures to ensure the law is included on the agenda of upcoming parliamentary sessions. Independent MP Hussein al-Saabri revealed this information on Wednesday during an interview with Shafaq News.

Saabri explained that First Deputy Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi has confirmed the session will take place soon. He added that parliament shows strong determination to pass the law during the current term. Saabri stressed the urgency of approval, saying, “If it is not approved now, there will be no real opportunity to pass it in future terms.”

The MP also emphasized that adopting the PMF Authority Law would recognize the sacrifices made by PMF fighters who battled ISIS. Moreover, it would allow the group to transform into a formal institution, governed by clear legislation. Saabri compared this to other security agencies that operate under binding laws.

Earlier, MP Ibtisam al-Hilali, representing the Shiite Coordination Framework, confirmed that over 100 lawmakers have endorsed a request to hold an extraordinary session to vote on the law. The Shiite Coordination Framework is pushing hard for the bill’s passage.

However, Kurdish and Sunni parliamentary blocs have opposed the law. They link their resistance to ongoing disputes over the budget, oil revenues, and border crossings. These disagreements have complicated the political environment surrounding the bill.

In addition, US officials have publicly voiced strong opposition to the law. They argue the bill could institutionalize Iran-aligned factions within Iraq’s security forces. This concern adds another layer of complexity to the debate.

Despite these challenges, proponents remain hopeful the law will pass soon. They argue that formalizing the PMF through legislation will strengthen Iraq’s security framework. Furthermore, supporters believe it will provide legal clarity for a force that played a vital role in defeating ISIS.

In conclusion, more than 120 Iraqi lawmakers continue to push for the PMF Authority Law’s approval. They understand the law’s importance for national security and political stability. Meanwhile, opposition from Kurdish, Sunni blocs, and the US highlights the challenges ahead. The outcome will significantly affect Iraq’s security and political landscape.
