Iraq Launches Investigation into Death of Prominent Psychiatrist Dr. Ban Ziyad

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered an urgent investigation into the death of Dr. Ban Ziyad Tariq. The respected psychiatrist died under unclear circumstances at her home in Basra on August 4.

The official explanation points to suicide. However, conflicting reports and public concern have sparked demands for transparency. Many Iraqis are now demanding full accountability from the government and medical institutions.

Dr. Ban rose to national prominence through her mental health work on social media. Her sudden death shocked the medical community and ignited widespread public anger.

Although her family initially stated she died by suicide, many colleagues disagree. They claim she showed no signs of mental distress and believe the case deserves deeper scrutiny.

In response, Prime Minister al-Sudani directed security agencies to launch a complete and transparent investigation. He emphasized urgency and warned against political interference.

A government source told Shafaq News that the Prime Minister is monitoring the case closely. He also urged officials to reveal results without delay.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee weighed in on the case. The committee demanded an impartial probe to determine if professional pressures, health issues, or foul play contributed.

The committee also urged the Health Ministry and Medical Association to improve hospital work conditions. They highlighted the need for better psychological support for healthcare professionals.

In addition, lawmakers called for broader reforms to address gender-based stress. They proposed establishing a ministry for women, families, and children—based on international models.

Local courts have also moved quickly. The Third Basra Investigative Court confirmed a case has been opened. A judge is now leading the inquiry under direct supervision.

Authorities have already recorded witness statements and detained one suspect. They await forensic findings to confirm the cause of death.

Public reactions remain intense. Supporters have appeared on national television to express doubts about the suicide claim. They are demanding full accountability from both legal and medical institutions.

So far, the Health Ministry and Medical Association have offered condolences and held a memorial service. However, critics say these steps are not enough.

As the investigation unfolds, Iraqis across the country are demanding full accountability—not just for Dr. Ban, but for all professionals under pressure.
