Iraq and Iran Sign Joint Security Pact to Strengthen Border Coordination

Iraq and Iran have taken a major step to improve bilateral cooperation. On Monday, they signed a joint security memorandum focused on securing their shared border. The ceremony took place in Baghdad. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani oversaw the event. A high-level Iranian delegation, led by Ali Larijani, Iran’s Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), attended the signing.

Larijani’s visit to Baghdad aimed to boost strategic ties and discuss regional developments. He also sought to advance ongoing economic projects between the two nations. The signing of the joint security memorandum stood out as the highlight of the trip. According to the Prime Minister’s Media Office, Sudani emphasized Iraq’s ongoing efforts to enhance relations with Iran. He said these efforts benefit both Iraqi and Iranian peoples.

Sudani also firmly condemned any aggression against Iran. He reiterated Iraq’s clear stance against actions escalating regional conflicts. Notably, he voiced support for continued dialogue between the United States and Iran. The agreement was formally signed by Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji and Ali Larijani.

Although the pact’s exact details remain undisclosed, experts believe the joint security memorandum aims to prevent threats along the often tense border. This formal coordination marks a key outcome of Larijani’s visit. Larijani conveyed greetings from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Prime Minister Sudani. He stressed Iran’s commitment to growing ties in various fields. He also highlighted major infrastructure projects, including linking railways between the two countries. This connection would support Iraq’s Development Road project and regional transit corridors.

Moreover, in a separate meeting, al-Araji assured his Iranian counterpart that Iraq is serious about preventing any security breaches. He emphasized that Iraq opposes aggression against neighboring countries. This pledge directly addresses Iran’s security concerns and forms the pact’s foundation

The two officials also discussed the wider regional security situation. They expressed shared concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging the international community to act. Larijani praised Iraq’s foreign policy, crediting it with regional stability.

Before arriving in Baghdad, Larijani described the visit as pivotal for Iran-Iraq relations. He noted the warm welcome Iraq gives to Iranian pilgrims during the Arbaeen of Imam Hussein. “We are formulating a security agreement with Iraq, which is very important,” he said. Larijani highlighted that Iran prioritizes its security along with the security of its neighbors. He contrasted this approach with other nations focused only on themselves.

In addition , Larijani also revealed plans to sign new agreements and meet many senior Iraqi officials during his visit. After Iraq, Larijani will travel to Lebanon to discuss trade and security. Regarding Lebanon, he stated Iran’s clear position: the Lebanese people must unite, and Lebanon’s independence remains vital to Iran.
