Iraqi Government Investigation Reveals Attackers in Baghdad Assault

The Iraqi government has officially concluded its investigation into the July 27 attack on a government building in Baghdad. Sabah Al-Numan, spokesman for the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, said that members of Kataib Hezbollah carried out the attack. These individuals belong to the 45th and 46th Brigades of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

An armed group entered a civilian government office without orders or authorization and launched the attack. They fired weapons at security personnel and civilians. Sadly, the attack killed one federal police officer and injured at least 15 others.

Furthermore, the Iraqi government investigation found that Iyad Kadhim Ali, the dismissed director of the Karkh Agriculture Directorate, coordinated with the armed group. Ali faced charges of administrative corruption, impersonation, forgery of documents, and falsification of contracts. These actions helped unlawfully seize agricultural land.

Due to leadership and control failures within the PMF, the commander-in-chief approved strict measures. These include dismissing commanders of the 45th and 46th Brigades. In addition, the commander of Al-Jazira Operations Command will face an investigative committee for negligence. All involved individuals will be referred to the judiciary, supported by solid evidence.

The violent incident occurred during a meeting at the Agriculture Directorate in southern Baghdad. Gunmen stormed the building, opening fire and provoking security forces to respond. The ensuing clashes caused casualties and raised serious concerns about security and control in the PMF.

In response to these events, Kataib Hezbollah Secretary-General Abu Hussein Al-Hamidawi demanded the suspension of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s executive powers. He requested this suspension last until the government’s term ends. His call reflects ongoing political tensions following the attack.

Overall, the Iraqi government investigation has revealed critical facts about the attack. It has exposed internal issues in the PMF and highlighted the need for accountability. Authorities continue to push for justice and improved security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
