Kataib Hezbollah Violence Sparks Deadly Clash in Baghdad

The United States expressed serious concern on Tuesday about the deadly clash in Baghdad’s al-Dora district on July 27. The confrontation involved Iraqi security forces and Kataib Hezbollah, a powerful faction within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce spoke exclusively to Shafaq News. She condemned the actions of Iran-backed groups operating under the PMF umbrella, including those the US labels as terrorist organizations. Bruce emphasized that these groups continue to engage in illegal and violent activities. Such actions undermine Iraq’s sovereignty and threaten regional peace.

Bruce urged the Iraqi government to act swiftly. She called on authorities to bring Kataib Hezbollah perpetrators and their leaders to justice without delay. Bruce also extended condolences to the families of those killed during the incident.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command provided details about the confrontation. It began when armed Kataib Hezbollah affiliates stormed the Ministry of Agriculture office in al-Dora. This attack was related to a leadership dispute. Supporters of the outgoing official resisted, and gunfire broke out.

The shootout left twelve people injured. Among those hurt were ministry employees and police officers. Furthermore, authorities arrested fourteen suspects linked to Kataib Hezbollah. These individuals have since been referred to the judiciary for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Baghdad accused Kataib Hezbollah of orchestrating Sunday’s armed standoff at the ministry’s office. However, Kataib Hezbollah denied any involvement. Instead, they described the event as regrettable and blamed tensions within the internal security forces. Specifically, Kataib Hezbollah claimed that an officer named Omar al-Obaidi fired the first shots.

Overall, this deadly incident highlights the ongoing Kataib Hezbollah violence affecting Iraq’s stability. Consequently, the US government continues to monitor the situation closely. At the same time, the Iraqi government faces increasing pressure to control these armed groups and restore order.

In conclusion, the recent violence in al-Dora marks another chapter in the persistent Kataib Hezbollah violence across Iraq. Authorities and international partners stress the importance of justice and accountability.
