Iraq Enforces Vehicle Standards on Imports

Iraq vehicle import standards will become mandatory for all cars imported into the country, starting with 2025 models. The Ministry of Planning confirmed the new regulation as part of a broader effort to organize the automotive market.

According to the ministry’s statement, the decision takes effect at the beginning of 2026. It aims to align imported vehicles with Iraq’s national safety and quality benchmarks.

Moreover, the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control emphasized that these regulations come from governmental economic recommendations. Specifically, they are based on the Cabinet’s Economic Council decision and the Diwani Order No. 37 of 2024.

The government will apply the new rules to all imported vehicles starting with 2025 models. However, officials have excluded electric and hybrid vehicles for now, as they are still developing specific technical guidelines.

Initially, the standardization body requested a delay to help suppliers adjust to the new technical conditions. They wanted to ensure manufacturers had enough time to meet the updated requirements.
However, the authorities have now confirmed the implementation without further postponement.

In addition, Iraq is working closely with the Gulf Standardization Organization. This cooperation helps ensure that Iraq’s standards match successful regional and international practices.

The ministry clarified that this move does not aim to lower vehicle prices. Instead, the purpose is to improve consumer safety and market organization. Many imported vehicles had previously entered the market without meeting proper safety benchmarks.

Iraq vehicle import standards will also reduce the chaotic inflow of unregulated cars into the country. That’s expected to lead to safer roads and more trust in vehicle quality.

Furthermore, this measure reflects Iraq’s growing focus on consumer protection. Officials want buyers to receive vehicles that meet modern technical requirements.

Iraq vehicle import standards will create a unified system that regulates car imports more strictly and transparently. It supports better monitoring and smarter policymaking.

In conclusion, this decision reinforces Iraq’s push for economic reform, infrastructure control, and regional alignment.

The move also marks a shift toward greater transparency in the car market. Future buyers will benefit from higher quality and safer vehicle options.
