Iraq Reclaims UNAMI Site as Sovereignty Strengthens

Iraq reclaims control of a facility in Mosul once operated by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq. This step marks a new chapter in the country’s path toward full sovereignty.

Government spokesperson Basem Al-Awadi confirmed the transfer in an official statement. He noted that the move follows a formal agreement between Iraq and the United Nations. According to Al-Awadi, more UN-operated buildings will follow the same handover process.

Iraq reclaims control of these sites as part of a planned disengagement from UNAMI operations. This transfer reflects the broader goal of ending the mission’s presence in Iraq. The government sees this transition as a symbol of restored independence and self-management.

The United Nations established UNAMI after the invasion of Iraq. At the time, Iraq requested the mission with the backing of the UN Security Council. The mission focused on helping Iraq rebuild institutions, offer humanitarian aid, and ensure fair governance.

Over the years, UNAMI worked closely with Iraq’s institutions. Its experts offered advice and support across political, legal, and humanitarian areas. Many officials view this collaboration as helpful during Iraq’s most fragile periods.

However, Iraq now aims to handle its affairs without external assistance. Al-Awadi emphasized that the country is ready to manage responsibilities once held by the mission. He stressed Iraq’s commitment to stability and development during this period of transition.

Iraq reclaims control not only of buildings but also of its political direction. Leaders believe this move confirms progress made since the mission’s start. As Iraq takes over more UN sites, it demonstrates readiness to manage national challenges alone.

While the United Nations plans to wind down its mission, Iraq’s leaders focus on building long-term strength. Iraq reclaims control as part of a broader national strategy that aims to showcase its growing capabilities and stability.
