Strong Partnership Drives Washington-Erbil Relations

The Kurdistan Region’s President Nechirvan Barzani held a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They focused on deepening cooperation and regional developments. The talk reaffirmed the strong partnership among Washington, Erbil, and Baghdad.

President Barzani expressed gratitude to the United States during the discussion. He emphasized a shared commitment to peace and regional stability. He also highlighted the Kurdistan Region’s appreciation for America’s consistent support.

Secretary Rubio recognized Barzani’s efforts to ease tensions between Erbil and Baghdad. He praised the President’s role in fostering dialogue between the governments. Rubio also described the strong partnership as a foundation for resolving political challenges in Iraq.

Recently, two major American energy companies struck long-term deals with the Kurdistan Regional Government. The agreements, worth a total of $110 billion, demonstrate deepening US investment in the region. While Baghdad rejected the deals, both Washington and Erbil welcomed them enthusiastically.

Rubio reaffirmed that Kurdish autonomy is central to America’s strategy in Iraq. He described it as the linchpin of US engagement in the country. According to Rubio, economic stability in the Kurdistan Region remains crucial for its long-term success.

During the call, Rubio called Washington’s support for Erbil a vital part of its Middle East policy. He emphasized that the strong partnership with the Kurdistan Region strengthens regional peace and prosperity.

Relations between Washington and Erbil have remained close for decades. The US has consistently backed the Kurdistan Region since its early steps toward autonomy. It has also played a major role in training and supporting Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

Moreover, Washington leads efforts to reform and modernize the Peshmerga. These efforts remain essential in the global fight against ISIS. America’s commitment to the region includes building the largest US consulate in the world, located in Erbil.

The phone call between Barzani and Rubio reflects more than a diplomatic exchange. It represents ongoing cooperation grounded in a strong partnership. This enduring alliance continues to shape stability and economic progress in Iraq and the wider region.
