Iraq’s Civil Defense Directorate has launched an intensive campaign aimed at preventing fire risks. As temperatures rise, the danger of fires grows, especially in areas with unregulated construction and power overloads.
Major General Hassan Ibrahim, Director General of Civil Defense, warned that summer heat directly increases the likelihood of fires. He explained that two main causes are unregulated building inside markets and excessive electrical loads.
These electrical loads result from unsafe wiring and chaotic use of power boards. When the system overloads, electrical sparks often trigger massive fires. The danger becomes worse in overcrowded and poorly planned neighborhoods.
To address this, the Civil Defense Directorate has prepared detailed safety plans. These include frequent inspections of commercial and industrial projects. The goal is to identify risks early and take corrective action.
Preventing fire risks remains a top priority. Many recent fires happened in projects that ignored safety regulations. As a result, the directorate referred these cases to legal committees under Decision 44 of 2013.
Some violators even faced official closure orders. This shows the government’s seriousness about enforcing safety laws. Officials believe that without strict action, public safety cannot be ensured.
In the past six months, the directorate referred over 1,000 unregulated markets and warehouses for legal review. These cases reflect a broader problem of ignoring safety standards in rapidly expanding urban zones.
General Ibrahim urged business owners and developers to follow industrial safety guidelines. This becomes even more critical during the high-risk summer period. High temperatures and added stress on the power grid make fires more likely.
Preventing fire risks depends on cooperation from all parties. Authorities need compliance from property owners, investors, and the public. By working together, Iraq can reduce fire hazards and protect lives and property.
