Arab League Chief Hails Iraq as a “Recovered Nation” During Historic Baghdad Summit

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has described Iraq as a “recovered nation” following its successful hosting of the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad. Speaking alongside Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Saturday, Aboul Gheit emphasized that Iraq is chairing both the political and economic summits for the first time in the League’s history, calling the move unprecedented and a clear sign of Baghdad’s rising influence in regional affairs.

He highlighted several initiatives introduced by Iraq, including the creation of a high-level ministerial committee composed of Iraq, Bahrain, the Arab League Secretary-General, and any other Arab states that choose to participate. The goal of this committee is to promote greater unity and coordination among member states.

Aboul Gheit also endorsed Iraq’s newly proposed Economic Reform Charter, which includes the development of financial support systems for Palestine and Lebanon. He applauded Baghdad’s commitment to humanitarian aid, especially in light of the crisis in Gaza, where over 40,000 children have been orphaned. Iraq has pledged $20 million for Gaza’s reconstruction and another $20 million for Lebanon, actions Aboul Gheit said reflect the country’s renewed momentum and deeper engagement with the Arab world.
