Iraq and UK Discuss Regional Security and ISIS Threat Amid Ongoing Developments in Syria

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with British National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, to discuss pressing security concerns in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Syria and its ripple effects on neighboring nations.

During their conversation, the two officials addressed a range of topics concerning the growing bilateral ties between Iraq and the United Kingdom. They also focused on the wider security environment in the region and the ongoing challenges posed by ISIS, with Hussein underscoring the importance of closely monitoring the group’s movements.

Hussein raised concerns about the conditions in prisons controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, warning of the significant risk posed by potential ISIS escapes from these facilities.

His comments come as Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani is on an official visit to the United Kingdom, where he has met with King Charles III and the British Prime Minister, signing a series of new agreements aimed at strengthening the bilateral partnership between the two countries.
