Oman-Iraq Partnership to Launch Karbala International Airport

In a move to enhance Iraq’s aviation infrastructure, a strategic cooperation agreement has been established between Iraq and Oman to support the development and early operations of Karbala International Airport—one of the country’s most ambitious air transport projects.

The agreement was formalized by senior representatives from both sides, marking a significant step toward regional collaboration in the civil aviation sector. As part of the arrangement, a specialized team of Omani experts in technical, administrative, and operational fields will be deployed to Karbala for 15 months. Their mission will be to oversee the airport’s initial operations, train Iraqi personnel to meet international standards, and ensure a seamless launch during this critical phase.

Karbala International Airport is designed to accommodate two million passengers in its first phase. Capacity is projected to rise to six million in the second stage, with the long-term goal of reaching 20 million passengers annually once the project is fully completed.

This partnership reflects the shared commitment of both nations to modernize infrastructure and elevate the quality of air travel in Iraq
