Sayyid Al-Sadr Urges Nationwide Protest Against Zionist Aggression in Gaza

Muqtada al-Sadr, the prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric and nationalist leader, has urged his followers to stage nationwide protests this upcoming Friday in response to what he termed the “brutal Zionist-American aggression” against Gaza. In a statement issued on Saturday, he called on Iraqis to participate in “peaceful but angry” demonstrations following Friday prayers in their local areas.

Al-Sadr condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, particularly the harm being inflicted on innocent civilians, including children, medical personnel, and journalists. He emphasized the importance of peaceful resistance, encouraging demonstrators to burn Israeli and American flags while insisting that only Palestinian and Iraqi flags should be raised during the protests.

In a symbolic reference to his late father, Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr, who wore a white burial shroud as a sign of defiance against Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1990s, Muqtada al-Sadr urged protestors to consider wearing similar white shrouds as an act of solidarity and resistance.

Al-Sadr’s call to action reflects his ongoing influence in Iraq’s political and religious spheres, where he has long mobilized grassroots protests, balancing nationalist sentiments, anti-Western rhetoric, and calls for reform. His message, following months of violence in Gaza, is part of a broader effort to mobilize public support for the Palestinian cause while emphasizing unity and resistance against perceived injustice.

Despite international calls for de-escalation and political solutions, al-Sadr’s rhetoric continues to shape public sentiment in Iraq, where there is strong support for the Palestinian people. His planned protests may become one of the largest coordinated public responses in Iraq to the Israel-Hamas conflict since it escalated in late 2024.
