Iraq Parliament to Fast-Track Teacher Protection Law Amendment

Baghdad, Iraq – First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mohsen al-Mandalawi, confirmed Thursday that the amendment to the Teacher Protection Law will be discussed and voted on in record time. This comes as part of efforts to address the needs of Iraq’s educators and strengthen their role in society.

Al-Mandalawi made the announcement after meeting with Uday Hatem al-Issawi, head of the Iraqi Teachers Syndicate, at his guest house. The meeting was attended by Representatives Salah Zini and Qahtan al-Moussawi. The main topic of discussion was the proposed first amendment to the Teacher Protection Law, originally passed in 2018.

During the meeting, Al-Mandalawi invited al-Issawi to attend a special session of the House of Representatives later that day. The session was dedicated to addressing the demands of educators and discussing the proposed law amendment.

Al-Mandalawi reassured the Teachers’ Syndicate leader of his commitment to fulfilling the educational community’s demands. He emphasized that these efforts would align with the powers and responsibilities of the legislative authority.

A statement from Al-Mandalawi’s office also confirmed that the amendment, which aims to protect teachers, instructors, supervisors, and educational counselors, would be finalized and voted on within a short period. The law, initially enacted at the beginning of this year, seeks to preserve the rights of educators and enhance their societal role.

Al-Issawi expressed gratitude to Al-Mandalawi for his support of the amendment and his ongoing attention to educational issues. He also praised the House of Representatives for dedicating time to address the needs of educators. This action, he said, highlights the legislative authority’s commitment to ensuring justice for teachers and other members of the educational sector.
