Development Road Project Nears Completion with Major Progress

Iraq’s transport sector is undergoing a major transformation with the ambitious Development Road Project. The government aims to diversify the economy by reducing reliance on oil. Transport Minister Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi provided key updates on the project’s progress and announced that the first phase of Al-Faw Grand Port will be completed by the end of this year.

A Vision for Economic Growth

The government has prioritized transportation as a vital sector that strengthens the national economy. As part of this effort, the Development Road Project is a crucial initiative. It integrates multiple components, including Al-Faw Grand Port, a railway network, a major highway, and a large industrial zone.

The railway will stretch 1,200 kilometers from Al-Faw to Faysh Khabur on the Turkish border. It will feature a dual-track system for efficient transport. Additionally, a high-speed road of the same length will connect Al-Faw with Turkey, creating a direct trade route to Europe.

Al-Faw Grand Port: A Strategic Hub

One of the project’s most significant components is Al-Faw Grand Port. Covering 54 square kilometers, it will be the largest port in the Middle East. Its location on open waters ensures smooth maritime operations. The first phase is set to be completed by the end of the year.

The initial phase consists of five major projects. First, five piers have already been completed. Second, a 62-kilometer highway links Umm Qasr to Al-Faw Grand Port. Third, a submerged tunnel, the first of its kind in the Middle East, extends 2,400 meters, including 1,250 meters underwater. The tunnel reaches a depth of 30 meters, with 12 meters dedicated to concrete structures and 18 meters submerged in water.

Overcoming Challenges with Innovation

Despite the complexity of the tunnel project, significant milestones have been achieved. Engineers successfully submerged ten massive concrete sections, each weighing 35,000 tons, for testing. Additionally, the first concrete section has been placed in its designated underwater position.

The fourth major component is the navigational channel, which has reached an advanced stage of completion. Overall, various project elements are progressing at different rates, with some exceeding 90% completion and others at 85%.

Finally, the fifth project focuses on the cargo handling yard located behind the five piers. Despite the challenges of land reclamation in this area, the filling process has surpassed 80% completion.

A Game-Changer for Iraq’s Economy

With the Development Road Project nearing completion, Iraq is poised to become a major transportation hub. This initiative will enhance regional connectivity, facilitate international trade, and create economic opportunities. The completion of the first phase will mark a crucial step toward achieving Iraq’s long-term vision for economic diversification and growth.
