Pope Francis Reflects on Iraq’s Christian Heritage in New Book Preface

Pope Francis has written the preface for The Christian Heritage in Iraq, a book authored by German journalist and theologian Matthias Kopp, who serves as the spokesperson for the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) and a consultor for the Dicastery for Communication.

The book explores the history of Christianity in Iraq, highlighting Pope Francis’ historic visit to the country in 2021 and the Holy See’s diplomatic efforts in the region.

In his preface, Pope Francis reflects on his Apostolic Journey to Iraq, undertaken in March 2021 despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and security concerns. “I recall with gratitude my visit to Iraq, which was a gesture of affection and solidarity toward Christians and all people of goodwill in the country. They remain constantly in my heart and prayers,” he wrote.

The pontiff expressed optimism for Iraq’s future, acknowledging the difficulties the nation faces while emphasizing its immense potential. “Above all, this potential lies in the people of Iraq—those working to rebuild civil society, foster democracy, and engage in sincere and meaningful interfaith dialogue,” he stated.

Pope Francis also underscored the significance of his meeting with Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Al-Sistani in Najaf, describing it as a powerful statement against religiously motivated violence. “That encounter was meant to send a message to the world: violence in the name of religion is a betrayal of faith. As religious communities, we are called to peace—we must live, teach, and pass it on,” he affirmed. He also recalled his visit to Ur in southern Iraq, where representatives of various faiths gathered to pray together under the same stars that once guided Abraham.

The pope praised Matthias Kopp’s work for shedding light on Iraq’s rich Christian heritage within the broader context of religious scholarship and historical literature. The book also highlights the Church’s presence in Iraq and the Holy See’s diplomatic engagement, reflecting the longstanding concern of successive popes for the country and its Christian communities.

Concluding his remarks, Pope Francis reaffirmed the vital role of Christians in Iraq’s identity. “It is impossible to envision Iraq without its Christian community. Alongside other believers, they have shaped a nation defined by coexistence, tolerance, and mutual acceptance since antiquity,” he wrote.
