The Kurdistan Region Marks 34th Anniversary of 1991 Uprising with Calls for Unity

Baghdad, Iraq- Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani marked the 34th anniversary of the region’s uprising against the former Iraqi regime on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the hard-won achievements gained through unity and solidarity.

“The uprising was a defining moment in history, demonstrating the unwavering resolve of the people of Kurdistan in their struggle against dictatorship and oppression. With a deep belief in the justice of their cause, they stood together in pursuit of freedom, dignity, and justice, paving the way for a new era,” Barzani stated.

The town of Ranya was the first to rise against the regime on March 5, 1991, igniting a movement that rapidly spread across Kurdish cities and towns. The revolt led to the expulsion of the Iraqi army from most of these areas, eventually laying the foundation for the establishment of a Kurdish parliament in 1992.

President Barzani called for “unity, solidarity, and mutual understanding among all groups and communities” to preserve the achievements of the uprising.

“This movement was the result of a long and difficult struggle, marked by immense sacrifices from the Peshmerga and the people of Kurdistan, in their pursuit of their rightful place in the new Iraq,” he added.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also paid tribute to the anniversary, stating, “This day will forever remain a symbol of resilience and freedom in our history.”
