Iraq-Russia Strengthen Ties with Key Agreements

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraq and Russia have deepened their cooperation with several significant agreements. The 10th meeting of the Iraqi-Russian Joint Committee took place this week in Baghdad. It was co-chaired by Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Russia’s Minister of Energy Sergei Tsivilev.

Both leaders emphasized the long-standing relations between the two countries. Hussein highlighted the broad scope of collaboration, which spans multiple sectors. Tsivilev, on the other hand, reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to expanding bilateral ties. He invited Iraq to participate in future conferences in Russia, underscoring the importance of continued partnership.

During the meeting, both sides signed several important agreements. One of these was a Maritime Transport Agreement between the Ministries of Transport. This agreement aims to enhance trade and transportation between the two nations. Additionally, both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Health Cooperation between Iraq’s and Russia’s Ministries of Health. This agreement will improve healthcare collaboration between the countries.

Another key MoU was signed between the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce and the Federation of Russian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. This agreement will promote trade relations between the private sectors of both countries. Additionally, a Protocol of Understanding was signed between Gazprom and Iraq’s Midland Oil Company. This agreement aims to strengthen the energy cooperation between the two nations.

Hussein also discussed Iraq’s balanced stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He called for a ceasefire and emphasized Iraq’s role as a mediator. The discussions also touched on Iraq’s oil exports from the Kurdistan Region to Turkey. Tsivilev confirmed that Russia continues to invest heavily in Iraq’s oil sector, which is valued at approximately $19 billion.

The two sides also discussed the potential for further agreements. Tsivilev praised the positive outcomes of the meeting and confirmed that additional deals are in the works. The strengthened relationship between Iraq and Russia marks a promising future for both nations. It highlights the growing importance of energy and trade cooperation between the two countries.
