UN Commends Iraq’s Launch of National Protection of Civilians Policy

Baghdad, Iraq- The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mohamed Al Hassan, attended the national conference for the launch of the National Protection of Civilians Policy today. The conference was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Muhammed S. Al-Sudani and organized by the Permanent National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, in collaboration with the National Security Advisory and the PAX organization. National Security Adviser Qassim Al-Araji and other dignitaries were present at the event.

In his address, Al Hassan conveyed the commendation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, praising the Iraqi government’s decision to implement the National Protection of Civilians Policy. He expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasizing that Iraq will receive full assistance from the international community and the United Nations in fostering peace and security for the country.

Al Hassan highlighted the importance of creating a national policy that enhances accountability and ensures that perpetrators are held responsible. He underscored the necessity for the policy to be executed through fair and transparent laws that will uphold justice.

He concluded his speech by reaffirming the UN’s commitment to working closely with Iraq towards building a secure, sovereign, and prosperous future for the nation, both internally and in its relationships with neighboring countries.
