Iraqi Prime Minister Assures Continued Salary Payments for Kurdistan Region Despite Technical Issues

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraqi PM Mohammed Al-Sudani confirmed that the differences between Baghdad and Erbil are “technical, not political.” He emphasized his government’s commitment to financing the salaries of public sector employees in the Kurdistan Region for the remainder of 2025, while continuing efforts to resolve the technical issues hindering the implementation of financial agreements. He clarified that these issues were related to the Federal Court’s decision, which outlined the salary distribution mechanism, including the following steps:

  1. Including Kurdistan Region employees in the federal budget.
  2. Localizing salaries in line with federal procedures.
  3. The Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to transferring non-oil revenues to Baghdad.

Although these procedures had previously encountered delays, they were recently overcome, enabling salary payments for January 2025.

Al-Sudani assured that the government would continue to fund salaries smoothly in the coming months and expressed hope that the regional government and the Federal Ministry of Finance would complete the necessary procedures to address the technical issues outlined by the Ministry of Finance.

He also called on the leadership in Erbil to cooperate with Baghdad in meeting financial and administrative requirements to ensure uninterrupted salary payments, which would contribute to Iraq’s economic and political stability.
