Grand Barzani Mosque Construction Begins in Erbil With Landmark Kurdish-Inspired Design

Construction and fieldwork began Wednesday on the Grand Barzani Mosque in Erbil, marking the start of a major new development in the Kurdistan Region’s capital.

The project follows the earlier laying of the foundation stone by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Officials expect the wider complex to combine religious, cultural, educational, and social spaces.

Kurdistan Region Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs Pshtiwan Sadiq visited the construction site on Wednesday. Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw also joined the inspection.

The officials met supervising engineer Goran Rashid and reviewed the initial stages of the project. They also received updates about construction plans and technical preparations.

The Grand Barzani Mosque will feature a distinctive design inspired by Kurdish heritage. Its architecture draws inspiration from the traditional Kurdish tent, known as a rashmal.

Designers have combined traditional Kurdish patterns and ornamentation with modern architectural elements. As a result, the project aims to create a landmark reflecting Kurdish cultural identity.

Kurdish engineers and technical specialists developed the project’s plans. Moreover, local expertise and capabilities will play a central role throughout the construction process.

The wider development will serve purposes beyond religious worship. Plans include spaces for educational programs, social activities, and major religious events.

Several architectural features will also reflect the life and legacy of Mullah Mustafa Barzani. He remains one of the most influential figures in the modern Kurdish nationalist movement.

The mosque will include four towering minarets, each rising 76 meters. The height reflects Mullah Mustafa Barzani’s age when he died.

Meanwhile, the four minarets symbolize the four directions. The design therefore combines symbolic elements with the project’s broader architectural vision.

The surrounding development will cover more than two million square meters. Officials plan to transform the wider area into a major religious and environmental destination.

A large park will form an important part of the development. The green space will contain more than one million trees, seedlings, and ornamental plants.

Additionally, planners will build an artificial lake within the complex. A large artificial waterfall will also become one of the development’s prominent features.

The project aims to increase green spaces and improve Erbil’s urban environment. Furthermore, the extensive landscaping could create a new recreational destination for residents and visitors.

The Grand Barzani Mosque project represents one of Erbil’s most ambitious architectural developments. Its combination of Kurdish heritage, modern design, and environmental planning sets it apart.

As construction progresses, local engineers and technical teams will continue overseeing the development. Officials have not yet announced a completion date for the full complex.

Nevertheless, work beginning on Wednesday marks an important milestone. The development could eventually become a significant cultural and architectural landmark in the Kurdistan Region.
