Top Judge Faiq Zeidan’s Tehran Visit Highlights Iraq-Iran Judicial Ties

Faiq Zeidan’s Tehran visit highlighted continued judicial cooperation between Iraq and Iran on Tuesday. The President of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council arrived in Tehran for an official one-day visit. Iranian judicial chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei invited Zeidan to the Iranian capital. Both sides planned to discuss several legal and judicial files during the meetings.

Moreover, the visit aimed to strengthen institutional cooperation between Baghdad and Tehran. Iraqi authorities did not immediately provide further details about the specific files under discussion. However, previous meetings have focused on broader judicial cooperation and legal coordination. The discussions have also included extradition arrangements and mutual legal assistance between both countries.

These agreements support institutional relations beyond political and security cooperation. Meanwhile, Faiq Zeidan’s Tehran visit came shortly after another high-level Iranian delegation traveled to Baghdad. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf recently visited the Iraqi capital. During that trip, Ghalibaf met Zeidan and discussed cooperation between Iraqi and Iranian legal institutions.

Therefore, Tuesday’s visit continues a series of recent contacts between judicial officials from both countries. Zeidan has also traveled to Tehran several times in previous years. During earlier visits, Iraqi and Iranian officials signed judicial understanding agreements. Those agreements reflected sustained engagement between the two judicial establishments.

Furthermore, the latest visit comes during a sensitive period for Iraq’s regional diplomacy. Baghdad continues managing relations with both Washington and Tehran amid rising regional pressure. The United States has recently intensified its economic pressure against Iran. Washington has described its latest measures as a major financial offensive against Tehran.

At the same time, Iraq maintains extensive economic, geographic, and institutional connections with its eastern neighbor. Consequently, Baghdad faces a complicated diplomatic balancing act between its two important partners. Iraq shares a long border with Iran and maintains significant trade relations with Tehran. The two countries also continue cooperating across several government and institutional sectors.

Against this backdrop, Faiq Zeidan’s Tehran visit demonstrates that judicial contacts remain active despite wider regional tensions. The trip also highlights Baghdad’s efforts to preserve working relationships across competing regional interests. Nevertheless, officials have not announced whether the meetings produced new agreements.

Further details may emerge after both judicial institutions conclude their discussions. For now, the visit reinforces the continuing importance of legal cooperation within broader Iraq-Iran relations.
