Iraq’s Artawi Gas Project Gains Momentum in TotalEnergies Push

Iraq’s Oil Ministry reviewed progress on a major gas development project with TotalEnergies. The talks focused on the Artawi oilfield and its role in Iraq’s energy plans. Officials discussed work stages, technical needs, and progress across early project areas. Therefore, the Iraq gas project remains central to Baghdad’s wider energy strategy.

Deputy Minister of Oil for Upstream Affairs Naseer Aziz led the meeting in Baghdad. He met TotalEnergies Iraq Managing Director Donia Chalabi to review the latest updates. Basra Oil Company Director General Basim Abdul Karim also joined the talks. Moreover, his presence helped connect ministry planning with field operations.

Chalabi gave officials a detailed update on engineering and logistics. She explained the work plan for different parts of the project. She also reviewed progress rates across the first development stages. In addition, she discussed the steps needed to keep work moving forward.

The Artawi project plays an important role in Iraq’s gas policy. Iraq still burns large amounts of associated gas during oil production. This practice wastes valuable fuel and increases environmental damage. As a result, the government wants to capture and process more gas.

The project aims to turn wasted gas into useful energy. It will collect gas from oil operations and send it to processing facilities. Then Iraq can use that fuel to support its electricity system. Therefore, the Iraq gas project could reduce pressure on power generation.

Furthermore, officials see the project as a way to cut energy imports. Iraq still depends on regional supplies to meet part of its power needs. Better domestic gas processing can support national energy security. It can also give the government more control over fuel supplies.

The project also supports Iraq’s environmental goals. Gas capture can reduce flaring and lower harmful emissions. Moreover, cleaner energy use can improve air quality near production areas. These gains matter as Iraq tries to modernize its oil and gas sector.

TotalEnergies brings technical experience to the development effort. The company can support engineering, project management, and energy infrastructure work. Iraqi officials want this expertise to speed up implementation. They also want stronger coordination between foreign partners and state companies.

Meanwhile, the Oil Ministry wants to remove administrative obstacles. Officials said they will support the project through coordination and security measures. They also want field teams to meet planned work targets. This support can help the project reach operational readiness.

The Artawi development also carries wider economic value. It can create more efficient use of Iraq’s natural resources. In addition, it can support electricity production and reduce fuel waste. These benefits can strengthen Iraq’s long-term energy independence.

However, the project still requires steady execution. Large energy developments need strong planning, funding, and security. They also need close cooperation between ministries, companies, and local operators. Therefore, officials must keep technical progress on track.

The Iraq gas project now stands as a major test for energy reform. It connects oil production, gas processing, electricity supply, and environmental goals. Moreover, it shows how Iraq wants to turn wasted resources into national value. If completed successfully, the Artawi project could reshape Iraq’s gas sector.
