Taif Sami Former Finance Minister Denies Arrest Rumors Amid Iraq Anti-Corruption Campaign

Iraq anti-corruption campaign developments continued to dominate public attention on Monday after former Finance Minister Taif Sami rejected claims that authorities had arrested her or that she had fled the country. Her media office described the reports as false and urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information.

The statement came after rumors spread widely across social media platforms. Some broadcast outlets also repeated the claims without official confirmation. Consequently, the reports attracted significant public attention as Iraq continues its sweeping anti-corruption operation.

According to Sami’s media office, the allegations have no factual basis. The office stressed that no official institution announced her arrest or departure from Iraq. Therefore, it dismissed the circulating reports as completely false.

Furthermore, the statement warned that the office will pursue legal action against individuals and organizations that continue spreading the allegations without credible evidence. Officials also called on Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission to address what they described as misleading media coverage.

In addition, the office urged journalists, political analysts, and social media users to verify information through official channels before publishing or sharing reports. It emphasized that responsible reporting remains essential during major government operations.

Taif Sami served as Iraq’s finance minister in the government of former Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani. She held the position from August 2022 until the formation of the new government in 2026.

Although Sami’s name circulated widely over the weekend, authorities did not include her among those officially announced in the latest arrests. Nevertheless, online speculation continued to grow as the government expanded its investigations.

The denial followed the government’s announcement of a large-scale anti-corruption operation on Sunday. Officials said authorities arrested 47 current and former lawmakers, political figures, and government officials during the campaign.

State media reported that investigators based the arrests on confessions made by Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili. Authorities detained him earlier this month over alleged financial irregularities linked to the oil sector.

Moreover, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council recently disclosed new details about the ongoing investigation. Officials said authorities seized assets worth more than 98 billion Iraqi dinars, alongside $11 million in additional funds connected to the case.

The government continues to describe the campaign as part of a broader effort to combat corruption and recover public assets. Consequently, investigators have intensified their work across several institutions while expanding financial investigations.

Meanwhile, public interest has remained high as new developments emerge almost daily. However, officials continue urging citizens to distinguish between verified announcements and unconfirmed online reports.

The latest statement from Sami’s office highlights growing concerns over misinformation during major legal investigations. It also reinforces calls for greater accuracy in reporting sensitive judicial matters.

As Iraq anti-corruption campaign investigations continue, authorities have not announced any legal action involving the former finance minister. Instead, officials have encouraged the public to follow official statements for verified updates.

For now, Iraq anti-corruption campaign efforts remain focused on individuals publicly identified by judicial authorities, while investigations into alleged financial crimes continue across multiple government sectors.
